Philanthropy with AI

I have been in philanthropy for over 30 years and recently retired. The key that I have found is always creating the relationships but I have found with AI it has taken the detail side of philanthropy to a higher level. I find this so helpful fascinating and hope you will also. I have listed out some areas that AI can make lives so efficient and easier. I hope you enjoy and let me know your thougths.

  • Get familiar with AI capabilities – Learn about the current state of AI technology and how machine learning, natural language processing and data analytics could apply to philanthropic goals. Look at case studies of AI projects at nonprofits.
  • Identify opportunities – Think about tasks and processes at your organization that could be automated or enhanced by AI. This may include personalized recommendations, sorting applications, predicting outcomes, etc. Focus on repetitive and data-heavy tasks.
  • Start small – Begin with a small pilot project to test using AI for one specific use case. This allows you to evaluate if AI delivers value without major disruptions. Consider both back-end optimization and customer-facing AI.
  • Evaluate AI vendors – Research companies offering AI services tailored for philanthropy. Assess if they have proven solutions for your needs and share your values. Be cautious of exaggerated marketing claims.
  • Develop data infrastructure – Ensure you have high-quality, well-organized data. AI is dependent on robust datasets relevant to your projects. Invest in data governance and databases.
  • Involve stakeholders – Get buy-in from staff, donors and partners. Be transparent about AI projects to build trust. Offer training on interacting with AI systems.
  • Focus on augmentation – Position AI as enhancing human work rather than replacing it. Make sure AI complements existing processes and aligns with organizational goals.
  • Start ethics conversations – Proactively consider potential risks like biases and lack of transparency. Develop guidelines for ethical AI practices tailored for your philanthropy initiatives.
